Early rising: FAQ

Two babies wake at 5am, only one is early rising: an early bedtime banks the night's sleep, a right-sized bedtime with a 5am wake is genuine early rising.

Why does my baby keep waking at 5am?

A 5am wake is not always genuine early rising. If bedtime is very early, your baby may simply have banked the eleven to twelve hours of night sleep they need. A true early wake and a too-early bedtime need different fixes, so rule the schedule out first before treating the wake itself.

Once you have ruled the schedule out, treat a genuine early wake the way you would any other waking in the night. Food, light and stimulation are the three signals that tell a baby the day has started, and reacting to them can reinforce the very wake you are trying to shift. The first thing to try today is keeping the room dark and quiet and holding off on starting the day.

Retraining a body clock is a bit like recovering from jet lag. It shifts gradually rather than overnight, so a rough patch part way through is normal and not a sign it is not working. If you would like the structured way to work through it, the early rising plan walks you through the order to check things in, and ongoing support lives inside the Snooze membership.

Is my early-rising baby just a low sleep needs baby?

Low sleep needs should not be diagnosed from how your baby seems during the day. Early waking has several possible causes, and daytime function alone cannot tell them apart. The whole picture needs looking at, timings, environment and feeds included, before you conclude your baby simply needs less sleep.

It is easy to land on “low sleep needs” because it feels like an answer, but a cheerful, functioning baby can still be waking early for reasons that have nothing to do with needing less sleep. Roughly three quarters of sleep work is foundations, the environment, the schedule, the feeds and the timings, and only about a quarter is the settling itself. That is usually where the real cause is hiding.

The first thing to do is look at the foundations before drawing any conclusion about your baby’s sleep needs. The early rising plan gives you a way to check them in order, and the age-based pathways inside the Snooze membership help you keep them right as your baby grows.

Can dropping a nap too early cause early morning waking?

Yes. Dropping a nap too early, or losing the third nap too soon, leaves a baby overtired by bedtime, and overtiredness is one of the most common drivers of early-morning waking. Getting that missing nap back in often settles the early wake.

It sounds back to front, because we tend to assume less day sleep means a longer night. In practice the opposite is usually true for babies. An overtired body clock tips towards waking early, so protecting day sleep is one of the most useful things you can do for the mornings.

The first thing to check today is whether a nap has recently been dropped or shortened, and whether your baby is coping with the transition. The early rising plan shows you how to protect day sleep and unwind an early drop, and the age-based pathways inside the Snooze membership help you time nap changes so this does not happen again.
