Developing positive cot association with your baby

5-12 months newborn 0-3 months settling sleep environment Sep 29, 2024

We want sleep to be a positive experience for all involved. However, it is easy and not uncommon for babies to have developed a negative association with their sleep environment. I know babies who cry when they see their cot or preemptively whimper as they’re carried upstairs to their nursery. Let’s be honest, it’s likely that you have feelings of dread in the build up to their sleep time too.

We want to transform the cot and sleep environment to have positive associations for you and your baby. Try relocating play time to the nursery. Open up the blinds, turn on the lights and have fun! If you have other children this is a great time to get everyone involved. Play peekaboo with the sleep sack and sing silly songs in the cot. No matter what you do, it should look and feel completely different from sleep time.
